Pictet Plans Physical Gold Fund in October on Inflation Concern

Sept. 23 (Bloomberg) -- Pictet & Cie., Switzerland’s biggest closely held private bank, will start a fund backed by physical gold on Oct. 1, expecting demand from investors looking to protect their wealth against inflation.

The Pictet (CH) Precious Metals Fund - Physical Gold will be held in an allocated account and offer investors the chance to own gold stored in vaults belonging to Pictet, the Geneva- based firm said in a statement today. Most existing investment products that are backed by physical gold are available through stock exchanges.

“Gold has consistently proven its ability to hedge against inflation and currency movements,” said Philippe Pol, who manages $286 million in commodity investments at the firm. He will run the new fund.

Gold holdings via exchange-listed vehicles surged to records this year. Investors are betting money supply will jump after governments piled in trillions of dollars to rescue ailing banks, inflating their way out of a recession.

Gold prices, currently trading within 2 percent of their all-time high, are headed for a ninth consecutive annual gain -- the longest streak since at least 1949.
