The Greeks spoke. Electors gave New Democracy party the power to create a coalition government, in a statement that chaos they did not want to choose a mainstream party such as the Pasok but continue to believe they should stay in The European Union. The pro-bailout New Democracy party won 30% of yesterday's vote, the equivalent of 130 of the 300 seats in the government. The winner will probably form a coalition with the Democratic Left and its rival Pasok, setting aside their animosity dating back to the end of the military junta, which would grant the coalition 179 seats in the government. Syriza party, although coming second with 26.9% of the vote count, is only granted 71 seats in the government. The EUR first shot downward 0.91% to 1.2521 before jumping back up to 1.2748, 0.65% higher than Friday’s close, and nearing a one-month high as markets unloaded some of the pressure weighing down on global risk appetite. Asian equity indices followed as Hang Seng gained 1.14% and NIKKEI advanced 1.77%. Commodities initially followed EURUSD’s move downward before recovering most of the position and trading in a narrow range. Gold lost 0.30% after bottoming out 1.25% lower than today’s open, and more volatile silver shed 0.50%. WTI however, scored a 1.00% gain as pressure of a Greek exit eased, regardless of OPEC member’s reassurance that it would make sure the supply in global crude market is enough. The G20 is taking place today and tomorrow in Mexico with the European crisis taking the center stage. Rumors are that some of the participants will be asking for the increase of contributions to the IMF, and that members are preparing a coordinated monetary interaction. But we believe the latter is unlikely unless the situation deteriorates further.
